| Abstract; The acme and the last common occurrence of Denticulopsis hustedtii (Simonsen et Kanaya) Simonsen are Late Miocene diatom events in the Thalassiosira yabei Zone (NPD 5C) of middle- to high-latitude North Pacific diatom biostratigraphy. The biostratigraphic utility of the events was examined in the Taga Group distributed in the Joban area, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. Diatoms from three stratigraphic sections, Ayukawa section in Hitachi City, Kohama section in Takahagi City and Izura section in Kitaibaraki City, were analyzed in detail. In all three sections, the events were recognized several meters below the diatom horizon of the first occurrence of Thalassiosira temperei, and show a similar pattern of frequency. Furthermore, in the three sections, the same biotite-bearing tuff layer is present two or three meters below the events. Therefore, the acme and the last common occurrence of D. hustedtii in the three sections were precisely correlated and were shown to be very useful biohorizons in diatom biostratigraphy.
