Abstract; We performed patch testing with metal allergens to patients who had been suspected of metal allergy from July 1994 to May 1998. The metal allergens with high incidence of positive reactions were Co 14% (255/1,825), Ni 10.5% (192/1,822), Cr 9.0% (164/1,819), Au 7.4% (102/1,376) and Hg 6.1% (109/1,783). Clinical diagnosis were contact dermatitis, systemic contact-type dermatitis, contact dermatitis syndrome, pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (P.P.P.), chronic eczema or lichen planus in the mouth and granulomatous dermatitis. The significant defference between causative metals in each clinical diagnosis were recognized in P.P.P.. Significant higher positive reactions to nickel than to cobalt with patch tests were found in P.P.P.. The lowest rate of accordance between the results of patch test and clinical relevance was 56.8% with Hg. (author abst.)
