Abstract;Nail plates from patients with tinea unguium were processed for histologic and culture examination. The results are summarized as follows. 1) Fungal elements were observed the under two-thirds of nail plate in 7 of the 10 patients, and upper one-third of nail plate in 2 of the 10. 2) When the nail clippings from above patients cut into small pieces and cultured on the dermatophytes isolation medium containing 5-FC, T. rubrum was detected 8 of 10 specimens regardless of the distribution of fungal elements in the nail plate. 3) Culture-positive rates of nail clippings removed with a nail clipper were higher than those of the nail powder obtained by scraping the nail off with a grinder. 4) The dermatophytes isolation medium containing 5-FC was more suitable for the culture of the nail specimens than Mycosel medium.
