Abstract; We describe a teaching strategy used for a school-aged girl with autism and mild mental retardation. The girl became confused in unpredictable situation in daily life, especially when attempting to make verbal requests. We used structured teaching to develop her verbal request skills using visual prompt in the natural context of making a snack by utilizing her strength of visual processing. After this trial she gradually became able to make verbal requests after a few sessions. The results indicated that even in unpredicatble situations, structured teaching with visual prompts can help a child with autism to improve their coping skills. (author abst.)
