| Abstract; We described the case of an 18-year-old male, who had been suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). He had an obsessive fear that he would hurt or bother other people. Subsequently he developed a compulsion to confirm that he had not indeed caused any such trouble. Finally, he could no longer meet women without wearing a medical face mask because of an obsessive thought that he might accidentally kiss the woman. Although these symptoms did not improved with drug therapy, the patient showed a remarkable response to exposure and response prevention. In the present case, the following factors were considered to play an important role in the improvement in the OCD symptoms: the patient was highly motivated and the therapy included not only therapist-aided exposure but also self-exposure. Moreover, he was not affected with depression as comorbidity, even though blaptophobia, a phobia of being hurt, has often been reported to be related to depression. (author abst.) |
