Abstract;A comparative study of the effectiveness of hand-washing using two kind of acidic electrolyzed water and tap water was carried out by the hand-type agar stamp method. The weak acidic electrolyzed water(pH5.5-6.5, chlorine ions 30ppm) employed was produced by SUPERCLEAN-TE. The strong acidic electrolyzed water(pH2.3-2.7, chlorine ions 10ppm) employed was produced by AQUATID NDX-250KH. Twelve volunteers(doctors and nurses of the dermatolgy out patient clinic) washed their hands for 30 seconds with flowing weak or strong acidic electrolyzed water or tap water. The hands were stamped to the hand-type agars, before and after hand-washing. The number of bacterial colonies formed in agar plantes were counted after 48 hours of incubation at 37.DEG.C.. The mean bacterial reduction rate of weak acidic electrolyzed water was 40.36%(mean logarithmic reduction value: 0.62), that of strong acidic electrolyzed water was 65.46%(0.65) and that of tap water was -24.81%(0.18). Thus there was a significant difference in mean bacterial counts between acidic electrolyzed water and tap water. These findings showed that the effectiveness of hand-washing using acidic electrolyzed water is superior to that of the tap water. There seems to be no significant difference between weak and strong acidic electrolyzed water in the effectiveness of hand-washing, but weak acidic electrolyzed water is closer to the pH of the skin and is less harmful to the hand and the environment. Therefore weak acidic electrolyzed water found to be more useful than strong acidic electrolyzed water. (author abst.)
