| Abstract; We report familial primary erythromelalgia of 27-year-old mother and her 6-year-old daughter. They both developed diffuse redness and swelling in the lower extremities with burning sensations, irritation and pain since their early childhood. Mother's elder sister had the same disease. The condition was refractory to any treatment including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, and only bathing in the cold water provided relief for the continuous pain. Since all of our patients did not present any preceded disease, we diagnosed them as familial primary erythromelalgia. We treated them with a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, anafranil, which was effective on increased temperature of the feet, accompanied by relief of the pain. (author abst.) |
