Abstract;Recently, biopsied specimens from bronchial asthma patients taken through bronchofiberscopy revealed pathophysiological changes in bronchial walls of these patients. Bronchial asthma is not only a functional disease of bronchial smooth muscle contraction, but also has pathological changes such as inflammatory cell infiltrations to bronchial walls, disruption of bronchial membranes and thickening of basic membranes. The strategy of treatment of bronchial asthma has also changed. In the guidelines published in foreign countries and in Japan, anti-asthma drugs are divided into two categories, long-term-control medications and quick-relief medications. In all the guidelines, they recommend to use sufficient doses of long-term-control medications, i.e. anti-inflammatory drugs, on the regular basis, and quick-relief medications, i.e. bronchodilating drugs, on the asneeded basis to get good control of symptoms. By this strategy, the number of patients who admitted to hospitals or visited emergency rooms due to severe attacks decreased remarkably. (author abst.)
