| Abstract; We studied whether axillary lymph node dissection in breast cancer could be avoided by examination of SLN(sentinel lymph node). The dye-guided method was used for identification of SLN. SLN was identified in 27 (87%) of 31 cases and axillary lymph node metastasis was predicted in 25 (93%) of 27 cases. There was no false negative case when limited to NO case (20 cases). SLN was able to predict axillary metastasis 100%. When limited to NO cases, therefore, the result of SLN can be used to avoid axillary lymph node dissection. In addition, we examined the usefulness of stampcytology in the diagnosis of SLN. In all twenty cases, the rate of stamp-cytology being consistent with histopathology was 90%. When limited to NO case, it was 92%. The results suggested that stamp-cytological diagnosis of SLN could serve as an index for avoiding axillary lymph node dissection. However, further studies using a larger number of cases are needed. (author abst.) |
