| Abstract; The purpose of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of group reminiscence therapy on dementia patients. Eight patients with Alzheimer's disease and 6 patients with vascular dementia were the subjects of this study. We assessed the mental function of the participants before and after the weekly therapy which lasted one year with our original Reminiscence Assessment CheckList, The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and The Home Care Assessment List. Based on the results of these three scales, the cognitive functions did not clearly improve, however, the psychological functions did tend to improve. Reminiscence therapy therefore appeared to promote psychological stability, emotional reactions and increase patient motivation, which might maintain or improve the remaining psychological functions in dementia patients.
