| Abstract; Objective: The aim of this study was to clearify the importance of sleep problems in patients treated on an outpatient basis at generalhospitals. Method: Multi-dimensional assessments to evaluate physical, mental and social factors were conducted using a stratified two stage assessment method. Three hundred and thirty six patients were screened from 1,555 being treated at the internal medicine department of Nagasaki Municipal Hospital and Nagasaki National Central Hospital using GHQ-12. At the second stage interview, various factors were further evaluated including the physical and psychiatric diagnoses, patients' health perceptions, the findings of a brief disability questionnaire, the number of restricted days, the number of disability days and the findings on the Groningen Social Disability Schedule. Results: The prevalence of sleep problems was 34.1%. Sleep problems were strongly related to both physical and social disabilities as well as to a perception of poor health. In addition, sleep problems were also significantly associated with the presence of mental disorders. However, sleep problems were not associated with age and sex. Based on the above findings, identifying and properly managing sleep problems is considered to be useful in the treatment of patients with mental health problems. (author abst.) |
