Abstract; This paper is based on an investigation regarding how the introduction of school counseling effects the teachers' mental health at schools. To do this, we had 364 junior high school teachers in T. prefecture take the "Stress profile for teachers" test and questionaire regarding school counseling. Group A consisted of 190 teachers in schools that utilized and continue to utilize school counselors. Group B consisted of 174 teachers in schools that had not previously utilized school counselors. The results of the stress tests show no particular difference between group A and group B regarding stress. These findings show that at present, school counseling is not yet sufficiently established in schools to substantially affect teachers' mental health. On the other hand, the answers to the questionaires also demonstrated a need for school counseling. We consider it important for schools to establish effective school counseling programs.
