| Abstract; It is interesting to investigate the structures of lipid aggregates formed upon collapse of overcompressed monolayers. It has so far been revealed that the collapse of DPPC monolayer induced vesicle formation at 30.degree.C, while it did not occur very often in the case of DMPC monolayer. Investigation of surface pressure-area isotherm at various temperature revealed that the collapse behavior was significantly different among its thermodynamic phases of monolayer. An excess free energy stored in overcompressed monolayer was calculated to show that the energy is apparently different between DMPC and DPPC monolayers, suggesting a possible cause of difference observed in their vesicle formation behaviors. We also made a new technique to investigate dynamic properties of monolayer collapse phenomena by analysis of the surface pressure-area isotherms on a trough driven at different compressing rates.
