Abstract;A short chain azobenzene derivative forms 2D fibers, 60nm wide and 100 micron long, at the air-water interface. It has been shown that the fiber is an associated assembly of small clusters 30nm in diameter, behaving as 2D colloids. Here, we report that the association is hierarchiral. The clusters first line up one dimensionally to produce a strand. Two of the strands, then, join together to result in a fiber. (author abst.)
