Abstract;We prepared ultra thin films of silk fibroin on mica substrate by cast methods. AFM observation of the thin films revealed that random coils of fibroin chains were developed on a mica surface to form a 2-dimensional network structure. This network-type film was transformed to b-sheet islands by a heat treatment procedure. The morphology and structure of thin fibroin films are discussed on the basis of the results of AFM observation. (author abst.)
