Abstract; The influence of dental amalgam fillings on the prevalence of atopic dermatitis (AD) was studied in elementary school students. 98 of 256 students, or 38.0%, had been treated with dental silver fillings, or amalgam, prior to our examination. 59 of the 256 students, or 23.0%, were suffering from AD. The prevalence of AD in the amalgam treated students was 48.0% and 7.6% in the students without amalgam treatment. The amalgam treated students showed a higher prevalence of AD as compared to the students without amalgam treatment (Odds Ratio = 11.12). Our study showed that mercury from amalgam, activates T-lymphocytes, not only antigen-specifically, but also polyclonally. Amalgam also increases AD prevalence and makes it intractable iatrogenically. Dental amalgam use should be banned to prevent AD. (author abst.)
