Abstract; We experienced 3 cases of atopic dermatitis whose conditions worsened by the old wives' treatment. Case 1. An 8-year-old boy suffered from atopic dermatitis since he was 4 years old. Hearing that an electric water therapy had an effect on atopic dermatitis, his parents bought a high-priced device making electric water. For four months, he was splayed with electric water over his entire body and also drunk it. In addition, he had applied an emolient cream found on the market over his entire body. His dermatitis worsened. Patch testing with the applied cream was positive. Case 2. A 5-year-old boy had treated atopic dermatitis with a herbal medicine and application of povidone-iodine. Hearing that a wood-vinegar liquid was effective for dermatitis, his parents used it as a bath essence. After 3 days of use, the irritant dermatitis worsened. His dermatitis cleared up after stopping the above therapy. Case 3. A 4-month-old boy had been treated for atopic dermatitis by a pediatrician. By the advice of the pediatrician, povidone-iodine was applied over his body for a month. His irritant dermatitis worsened. His dermatitis cleared up when he stopped applying povidone-iodine. The important point of the treatment for children is that the first measure of treatment is decided by their patients' will. There is the possibility that the patient could select an inappropriate treatment. Disinfectant treatment is unsuitable for the treatment of atopic dermatitis because of the irritation to the atopic skin. It is important that we make more effort to give detail information about the etiology of atopic dermatitis to the patient's parents. (author abst.)
