| Abstract; Some patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) claim that their skin lesions do no respond well to topical steroids. When AD patients do not recover as expected, one should suspect hypersensitivity to topical steroids. We examained the incidence of contact dermatitis from topical agents in adolescent and adult patients with AD. Patch testing was performed on 24 patients after topical agents were withdrawn to avoid the possibility of the effect of topical treatment on the skin test. A total of 147 patch tests (77 for male, 70 for female) were done, with a mean number of 6.1 patch tests per person. The agents were applied as is. Twenty patients showed negative reactions to topical agents which they had used. In each of the other four patients, one positive reaction was observed to the four different agents. The incidence of contact dermatitis from topical agents being used in AD was 8%. During the withdrawal period, immunological parameters did not change much and only LDH decreased significantly.
