Abstract;Biochemical engineering has developed from the industrial production of penicillin in the United States. In Japan, its foundations were established by Professors Shuichi Aiba and Hisaharu Taguchi. Rapid progress in biotechnology has led to the expansion of biochemical engineering into new fields. I have endeavored to develop the following five research areas: (1) cultivation of microorganisms, including genetically engineered organisms; (2) cultivation of plant cells and industrial plant cell regeneration systems; (3) industrial cultivation of mammalian cells; (4) application of artificial intelligence to biological and medical fields; (5) application of functional magnetite to biological and medical fields. Recent results for these areas are reviewed. (author abst.)
