Abstract;Running tests on the line began in April 1997. Since then, we have conducted many evaluations including speed increase tests, general function tests using two trains, and reliability and durability tests. On 14th April 1999, the maglev train MLX 01, as a manned train, marked a new world-speed-record of 552km/h. In order to have the practicability of the JR-Maglev system evaluated by a third party, the Ministry of Transport organized the Technical Evaluation Committee. In March 2000, the Committee presented their evaluation based on the test results of the past three years. In April 2000, we entered into a new five-years test phase. Through this new phase, it is expected that the system will be made more elaborate. (author abst.)
