Abstract; We have found that the crown ether probe/.GAMMA.-cyclodextrin complexes bind alkali metal ions in water. The crown ether probe connected with pyrenyl moiety forms a 2:1 complex with a metal ion in a .GAMMA.-cyclodextrin cavity, which results in selective pyrene dimer emission. The selectivity of probe/.GAMMA.-cyclodextrin complex sensors for metal ions is successfully tunable by the size of crown ether. (author abst.)
