| Abstract; We investigated the short-term measurement of luminol-dependent chemiluminescence in bovine whole milk samples to detect sub-clinical mastitis. Milk samples from dairy cows were classified by somatic cell counts(SCC) in 84 quarter-milk samples into 3 groups: healthy quarter (less than 200,000 cells/ml), suspected-clnical quarter (200,000 cells/ml-500,000 cells/ml) and clinical quarter (more than 500,000 cells/ml). Phagocytic activity of polymorphonuclear leucocytes was quantitated by an opsonized-zymosan-induced luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence(CL) technique. CL was measured for 15 minutes. Quarter-milk samples with a chemiluminescence under the threshold value for the healthy quarters were found in 98.3% (56/57). Healthy quarter-milk samples, above the mean, had rising tend in SCC. This finding suggests that luminol-dependent chemiluminescence with a 15 minutes-measurement can detect a rising tend in SCC. (author abst.) |
