| Abstract; We attempted to classify the psychiatric symptoms of 7 patients with epilepsy by the time course of the symptoms into ictal, intermittent and continuous types. For intermittent type patients, we also examined the temporal relation of clinical seizures and the factors leading to the development of a chronic course. Ictal, intermittent, and continuous symptom courses can co-exist in the same patient or undergo transitional changes. Therefore, a uniform, time-course defined classification is difficult. Antiepileptics were effective for ictal or ictal-related intermittent type patients. Combined use of antipsyehotics and antiepileptics was effective for the chronic continuous type patients and intermittent type patients approaching continuous type patients. Antipsychotics alone were effective for chronic continuous type. These findings suggest that pharmacotherapeutic effects may be a criterion in the classification of psychiatric symptoms in epilepsy. In addition, findings from one case demonstrated that psychological relationship in the family contributed significantly to progression from intermittent type to chronic epilepsy, indicating the importance of the patient's environment in psychiatric therapy.
