| Abstract; To evaluate the efficacy of senna in a colonoscopy preparation combined with polyethylene glycol solution, a prospective randomized study was performed. Three hundred and seven patients who underwent colonoscopy from September 1998 to July 1999 were randomly divided into two groups. Group A (167 patients) took 1.0 g of senna the night before colonoscopy. Group B (140 patients) did not receive senna. The patients were further divided into 2 groups; below 65 years old (the younger group) and 65 and above (the elderly group). The two groups were then evaluated by rate of early defecation before colonoscopy (the rate of early defecation: Group A:Group B= 56%: 41%), the frequency of defecation before colonoscopy (Group A: Group B= 8.1:7.9), the time in bathroom (Group A:Group B= 5.2 hours:5.1 hours), the presence and degree of abdominal pain ( abdominal pain presence: Group A:Group B= 14%: 9 %, among the elderly; Group A:Group B= 21%: 3%), the patients' condition at the bowel preparation (the score of preparation; Group A:Group B= 2.2:2.1) and the time required for colonoscope to reach cecum (Group A: Group B=8.0 min.: 8.7 min., p=0.22). The findings suggest that senna taken the night before colonoscopy results in earlier defecation on the day of colonoscopic examination. However, senna did not improve bowel preparation. The elderly patients tended to experience greater abdominal pain after senna. Therefore, routine administration of senna in combination with polyethylene glycol appears undesirable. (author abst.) |
