| Abstract; The feeding habits of wild and cultured grouper on artificial reefs off the coast of Shiraishijima Island in the central Seto Inland Sea were examined. 195 Epinephelus akaara ranging from 11.1 cm to 32.5 cm total length were caught by gill net. Stomachs of 75.9% of the sample contained food items. The average relative food weight (food weight/fish weight * 100) of the grouper was approximately 1%. There was no significant difference in the composition of the diet between wild and cultured grouper. Although the composition of the diet was no seasonal, predation was slightly size-dependent. The grouper fed mainly on macrura, anomura, brachyura, pisces, or on an artificial diet that was provided by the acoustic sound feeding buoy system. These natural prey items, which colonized the artificial reefs, may be the most important food for the grouper. (author abst.) |
