Abstract;Expert systems have been developed as medical decision support system since 1970's. Although they achieved several characteristics of medical diagnostic reasoning, several important problems have not been solved and studies on medical expert systems is stuck with the following problems to be solved: (1) rule-based reasoning is not good at dealing with atypical cases. (2) Although medical experts return to the cases after applying several diagnostic rules, decision support systems cannot have such a process. (3) Expert systems cannot deal with temporal reasoning. (4) Expert systems cannot learn from cases and do not revise their knowledge bases. (5) When a medical expert meets a very complicated case, he/she will discuss with several experts in order to take the best strategy for this case. Decision support systems do not have such a process. In order to solve these problems, several new research directions, such as knowledge discovery, intelligent agents have been started. In this paper, studies on artificial intelligence in medicine have been reviewed and then it is discussed what kind of AI-based solutions to the problems mentioned above have been applied and have not been applied yet.
