| Abstract;Disease name is a classified label of a patient's health condition and it would be impossible to construct a standard measter of disease names without defining the purpose of the classification. In Japan, there is no useful standard master of disease names for exchanging clinical information. although much efforts have been made through various projects. As we are facing to the new era of computerized patient record, we have to construct a new standard master of disease names that can be practically used in clinical settings. The requirements of the master are that, 1) each entry should represent one particular disease concept, 2) each entry should have both a code for exchanging the information of the concept and a standard presentation form, 3) each entry should include the auxiliary information to augment easy registration of a disease name to computeruized patient record system, 4) the rule of creating a new disease name by adding modifier-terms should be explicitly described, 5) the method to maintain the master should be disclosed, 6) the method to exchange a disease status of patient using the master should be defined, 7) relational information with other international standard like ICD-10 should be included.
