| Abstract; In July 1998 Kobe University Hospital replaced the old hospital information system to a new PC ordering system. Following this, in June 1999 the pathology system was also replaced. The new system upgrades the old system, while preserving as many of its functions as possible. The new system is capable of archiving data concerning each case electronically by combining macro- and micro-images with the diagnosis and findings. It has also expanded the diagnosis entry function by allowing entry of free comments concerning histopathological diagnosis. The new system is also designed to simplify the entry of diagnosis, using SNOMED codes and the rules for studying various cancers, prepared by the society specializing in each type of cancer. Immediately after the new system was put into operation, a number of problems were noted, and the operation of the new system was not smooth. It took about one year for the new system to begin to work as expected. The problems which occurred immediately after the system replacement were probably due to the following factors: (1) the replacement was made in haste, with insufficient check to details or poor pretest operations; and (2) the manufactures did not have a rapid response to our requests if we detected problems. This report shows evaluation of a new system comparing to the old one and discuss problems found during the system replacement. (author abst.) |
