| Abstract; We treated a 16-year-old female who had systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with obsessive-compulsive symptoms. She was disgnosed to have SLE at 14 years of age and had been treated with prednisolone. At 15 years of age, she was admitted to a mental hospital to be treated for obsessive-compulsive symptoms and emotional instability. On admission, she was diagnosed to clearly demonstrate compulsive behavior, emotional instability and agitation. oth her emotional instability and agitation improved after being treated with levomepromazine. However, the patient's symptoms of compulsive behavior did not improve. Eventually, her compulsive behavior improved after being treated with lithium carbonate. Although many previous studies have emphasized that either clomipramine or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors can effectively treat obsessive-compulsive disorders, our case suggested that lithium carbonate is also useful for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
