| Abstract; We herein report four adolescent patients who demonstrated withdrawal and passive tendencies regarding interpersonal situations after quitting high school. All patients avoided interpersonal relationship for a long time because of increased sensitivity and fear of others. They hesitated to enter into close interpersonal relationships or even give such relationships a chance to grow. We diagnosed them to have social phobia with an avoidant personality disorder. They did not show any delusions of harming others or feeling guilty toward others, and were not concerned about either blushing, eye-to-eye contact, facial expressions or body odor. These clinical characteristics were clearly differnt from those observed in severe type Taijin-Kyofu-Sho (The Japanese Type of Social Phobia). In addition, in all four patients, their families did not support them sufficiently. We advised the patients to take up new challenges such as studying by correspondence, obtaining a driver's license or getting a part-time job in order to meet people. After following such therapeutic advice, all four patients were gradually able to develop new relationships and thus became reintegrated into normal social activities. (author abst.) |
