Abstract;Three elderly cases who all demonstrated an immodithymic character became severely enraged after discovering that family menbers had committed moral transgressions. Case 1 was a 72-year-old male patient who became extremely enraged because of his daughter's extra-marital affair. After undergoing psychotherapeutic intervention he finally settled down and based on "present day" normal common sense, he eventually could accept the behavior of his daughter and in the end his rage subsided. Case 2 was a 65-year-old female patient who became very enraged when she heard her friend speak fondly of her deceased husband and was suddendly reminded her own husband's extra-marital affair which had taken place 30 years previously. After receiving out-patient psychotherapy she was gradually able to overcome her rage. She eventually accepted her husband's actions as something that she could not control. Case 3 was a 70-year-old male patient who became so highly enraged after his daugther criticised him that he had to be hospitalized for 2 weeks. After undergoing psychotherapy he was eventually able to accept the fact that his daughter's behavior was not unusual from the view point of "present day" normal common sense and finally his rage subsided. The authors hypothesized that these rage reactions occurred due to the effects of old age in individuals with an immodithymic character. These herein described conditions are considered to be one specific type of situational reaction in old age. In addition, the suitable psychotherapeutic approaches for the treatment of such rage reactions are also discussed. (author abst.)
