| Abstract;4,4',7,7'-tetrachlorothiomdigo (TCTI) and 4,4',5,5',7,7'-hexachlorothioindigo (HCTI) are reddish purple pigments and also used as photoconductors for photocopiers. The electrophotographic photoconductivity has been reported to be higher in TCTI than HCTI by one order of magnitude, because TCTI is assumed to involve charge transfer transitions along the stacking axis, thus creating weakly-bound CT excitons. The present investigation was attempted to directly observe the CT transition in TCTI by means of polarized light using single crystals. Quite contrary to our expectation, no CT transition was observed either in TCTI or HCTI. This evidently indicates that the proposed CT model is totally ruled out to explain the high photosensitivity of TCTI, pointing out the necessity for another photoconduction mechanism.
