| Abstract;Image quality is a topic of keen interest, but often elusive. For any imaging system, the image quality must be "right" for the product to be successful. Historically, image quality has always been developed by the imaging industry. First the photographic industry, and latter TV, printing, and now consumer imaging industries. Why is image quality such a difficult topic to master? One reason is there is no consistent structure or framework that brings together all the elements. Another reason is the historical reliance on "image physics" as the complete description of image quality, ignoring or minimizing the human or customer component. This presentation puts forth "postulates of image quality" and proposes the Image Quality Circle that brings these postulates together in a unified but unconventional way. (author abst.) |
