| Abstract; The kinetic theory for MTDSC can best be described as characterising the response of the sample in terms of its speed of the response. For example, the vibrational heat capacity generally has the characteristic that it can respond rapidly, compared to the speed of the modulation, and it is reversible. In contrast, a chemical reaction responds slowly and is often irreversible. This behaviour can be modelled in all its important respects by conventional kinetic models. The glass transition presents more of a challenge although all of the principle characteristics of its behaviour can be modelled using kinetic theories of the glas transition. When it comes to melting behaviour, however, much is still uncertain. Some new developments in microthermal analysis will be useful in resolving these uncertainties. (author abst.) |
