Abstract; This study aimed to evaluate health status of mentally retarded persons(MRs) using health examination and to discuss the health-related problems. Seventy-nine MRs(41 men and 38 women), ages 15 to 46 years, living in a institution for MRs in Saga Prefecture in Japan, were examined by anthropological measurement, urine test, blood pressure measurement and blood examinations. The obtained results were as follows; 1) The high rates of subjects with HBs antigen(11.5%) and with HBs antibody(57.7%) were obtained in the institution. 2) The higher rates of women with obesity(BMI>=26.4) and of men with emaciation(BMI<19.8) were found than age-matched general population in Japan. The rates of obese subjects with Down syndrome(54.5%) were much higher than those without(10.5%). 3) The mean levels of hemoglobin in both men and women were lower than age-matched general population in Japan, suggesting increasing tendency towards anemia in MRs. 4) All subjects showed the normal range of blood pressure(Systolic blood pressure<140 and diastolic blodo pressure<90). It is necessary to establish MR-specific health care especially considering dietary life, exercise and prevention for infectious diseases, in the future. (author abst.)
