Abstract;Average time of death was used to determine the heritability of tolerance to sea water in rainbow trout. A narrow sense of heritability for tolerance to sea water was calculated as 0.538 by factorial mating system. This indicates a high genetic variability of the trait in the rainbow trout population surveyed in the present study. A broad sense of heritability and degree of fluctuation for tolerance to sea water calculated from the same mating system shown above are 0.748.+-.0.277 and 0.366.+-.0.157 in the mean respectively. Degree of fluctuation is directly correlated to broad sense of heritability. The average of broad sense of heritabilities is close to narrow sense of heritability. Based on these results, an effective selection for sea water tolerance might be expected in the population surveyed. (author abst.)
