Abstract;Number of vertebrae of resident and anadromous pond smelt, Hypomesus nipponensis, living in Lake Ogawara, Japan, was counted to identify any morphological distinctions that would allow us to discriminate their life history styles. No significant differences in the number of vertebrae were found in most year classes in the lake. Results of this study suggest that the numbers do not differ between anadromous and resident pond smelt. The number of vertebrae varied among localities in Japan, being lowest in and near Lake Ogawara. Five groups were detected in Japan through multiple comparison analysis of vertebral number, but north-south geographic cline was not found. (author abst.)
