| Abstract; The high resolution X-ray spectrometer on board the Japan's fifth X-ray astronomy satellite, ASTRO-E, utilizes an X-ray detector of new concept, the X-ray microcalorimeter. This device measures the energy of each X-ray photon as heat. An energy resolution of about 10eV at 6keV was obtained, which is by an order of magnitude better than conventional non-dispersive X-ray spectrometer. The calorimeter array was cooled down to 60mK by a three stage cooling system. (author abst.) |
