Abstract; The Cu/ZnO catalyst manifests a high and substained activity in methanol synthesis from H2 and CO. In the present study, we intend to picture the bonding nature between Cu deposited on ZnO and CO with the aid of adsorption calorimetry in combination with the IR technique. For the 773K-treated sample, CO species adsorbed on the copper species gives a heat of adsorption of about 110kJmol-1 and an IR absorption band at 2098cm-1. As a result, it is clear that the force operating in the Cu/ZnO-CO system is successfully explained by taking account of a contribution of .PI.-bonding nature. This result leads to the interpretation that the copper metal species were formed on ZnO by the heat treatment at 773K. (author abst.)
