| Abstract;.ALPHA.-Alumina powders with an average particle size of 0.14.MU.m were sintered using spark plasma sintering(SPS) at a sintering temperature between 1200 and 1550.DEG.C.(at 50.DEG.C. intervals). A specimen with a relative density of 99.9% could be achieved with an heating rate of 92.DEG.C./min up to 1350.DEG.C. for a holding time of 3min under a uniaxial pressure of 30MPa. Microstructure of sintered compact was homogeneous and its grain size increased during sintering in SPS process. As results, it was found that the sintered density of alumina ceramics could be increased at lower temperature and the sintering time was extremely shortened by SPS, as compared with conventional pressureless sintering(PLS) with a holding time of 2hr. The results revealed that rapid sintering via SPS process was effective for promoting the densification of alumina ceramics. (author abst.) |
