Abstract;Acetal-copolymers are well-known engineering plastics whose excellent mechanical properles and chemical stabilities are suitable to manufacture electronic products, automobile parts and many precision machines. Occasionally, the moldings of the copolymers deteriorate under some peculiar conditions during their storage periods, consequently reduce their original mechanical properties and sometimes reek of the smell of formaldehyde. The author found that the pyrograms obtained by pyrolysigaschromatography method using high-resolution mass spectrophotometer(PyGC/MS) as a detector were remarkably different in their profiles between the raw material and deteriorated molding. The pyrolysis products of deteriorated sample were specifically composed of cyclic acetals. In this report, the degradation mechanisms of copolymer molding were presumed according to analytical results. (author abst.)
