Abstract; In order to design photoresponsive molecules, we designed and synthesized ruthenium complexes of 2,2'-bipyridine modified by L-amino acids or peptide residues at the 4,4'-positions. The diastereomers, L-.DELTA. and L-.LAMBDA. complexes, were resolved by using chiral HPLC, and the peptide conformation was analyzed by molecular mechanics calculation. We furthermore found that the emission (634 nm excited at 465 nm) of the ruthenium complexes is quenched by 20 % upon addition of phosphate anion (5 eq.), however is enhanced in intensity thereafter.
