| Abstract;Metmyoglobin whose N-terminal glycine was modified with diethylenetriaminepentaacetato-cobaltate(III)(metMb{CoIII(dtpa)}) was reduced by a methylviologen-radical cation to form deoxyMb{CoIII(dtpa)}, followed by CoIIIpetitive intramolecular electron-transfer(ET) reaction from deoxyMb to the {CoIII(dtpa)} moiety within deoxyMb{CoIII(dtpa)} and intermolecular ET reaction from deoxyMb to the {CoIII(dtpa)} moiety of metMb{CoIII(dtpa)} existing in excess. The intramolecular ET reaction was extremely slow for the long-range ET reaction of myoglobin, arising because the reorganization energy for the aminopolycarboxylatocobaltate(III) and -cobaltate(II) complexes is very large. The slow rate constant was discussed on the Marcus-Sutin equation for the distance dependence on the ET rate, which was compared with the data for zinc-substituted myoglobin modified with the {CoIII(dtpa)} complex.
