Abstract; To 31 patients with chronic respiratory diseases complaining of the difficulty in expectoration of sputum, SS320A was given at a daily dose of 1.2g (divided into 3) for 2 weeks, and subjective symptoms related to the difficulty in expectoration, and physico-chemical properties of sputum and the change in transport velocity by cilia of frog palate mucosae were investigated before and after treatment. In the final global improvement rating, the rate of cases assessed as "moderately improved" or more was 61%, that as "safe" was 97% in the safety rating, and that as "useful" or more was 61% in the usefulness rating, showing excellent efficacy and high safety. No particularly noticeable change in physico-chemical proparties of sputum was observed before and after administration of SS320A, but an increase in the transport velocity by cilia of frog palate mucosae (19.12 .+-. 1.11 .RAR. 22.20 .+-. 1.22mm/min, p = 0.002) was observed. Out of 17 cases who showed increases in the transport velocity by cilia of frog palate mucosae, 12 cases (71%) showed marked improvement in subjective symptoms. From the above results, SS320A was proved to be a highly useful mucoactive agent. (author abst.)
