Abstract;Cytogenetic studies making use of in vitro injection of colchicine and conventional Giemsa staining have been carried out on seven species of noctuid moths (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae). Karyotypes of all but one species are entirely new to cytology. Chromosomal preparations were made from brain ganglia by using NaCl-acetic Carnoy-air drying method. Somatic metaphases of all the seven species, Agrotis spinifera Hubn., Agrotis ypsilon Rott., Heliothis obsoleta Fabr., Ophiusa algira Linn., Plecoptera reflexa Guen., Plusia orichalcea Fabr. and Spodoptera mauritia Boisd. revealed 2n=62 in males and females, containing one pair of heteromorphic chromosomes in females whereas the male meiotic prophases of all specimens examined showed n=31. These findings suggest the ZW:ZZ sex-determining system in these noctuid species. This may be an indication of a phylogenetic peculiarity of the noctuid species suggesting that the karyotype of this group of moths is evolutionally rather conservative. (author abst.)
