Abstract; We examined 104 children with first-episode urinary tract infection(UTI) regarding types and rates of urinary tract abnormality. In these children, both abdominal ultra sound and voiding cysturethrography were performed. The children were divided into two groups: those with urinary tract abnormalities (Group I) and those without urinary tract abnormalities (Group II). In addition, Group I patients who were followed for longer than three years were divided into the following three groups: naturally ameliorating cases (Group A), patients with no change (Group B), and deteriorating cases (Group C). Factors related to deterioration were also, examined in this study. Vesicoureteral reflux(VUR) was observed in 38 patients (36.5%). Obstructive uropathy was seen in 28 patients. There are no significant differences concerning age, blood and urine examinations between Group I and Group II. We could not find significant differences between Group A and Group C except urine NAG (p<0.05). In the patients with VUR, 15 patients (39.5%) had also obotructive uropathies. When we check the existence of urinary tract abnormalities for the patients with UTI, we should be careful not to overlook obstructive uropathies. (author abst.)
