| Abstract; We previously reported the method for treating obese elementary school children using a checklist for lifestyle monitoring. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of background factors, such as anthropometric indices and past and family histories, on the responsiveness to the therapy. The study subjects were 73 consecutive obese children who successfully finished or dropped out of the therapy during seven years. Each child was subjected to the treatment for longer than 200 days. Final percent overweight correlated with initial percent overweight, initial percent body fat, onset age of obesity, birth weight and father's body mass index. The obese children who successfully finished the treatment hed a lower initial percent overweight, initial percent body fat, birth weight and father's body mass index, an older onset of obesity and were more active than those who dropped out. Those whose percent overweight was less than 55 percent and those whose birth weight was below 3250 grams were more successful in the treatment, the odds ratios being 4.4 and 2.9, respectively. These results suggest that the present mode of treatment for obesity should be started before the percent overweight reaches 55 percent. Those who are severely obese and whose birth weights are large should be treated with a more rigorous program than the present one. (author abst.) |
