Abstract; We are developing a system that will retrieve a music piece based on the user's impressions of it. People who have extensive knowledge of music can easily retrieve a specific music piece from a large music database by inputting concrete information such as the title, the names of the performers, or the name of the composer. However, people who lack such knowledge have difficulty in retrieving a specific music piece because they cannot give concrete information about it. Our music-retrieval system will enable anyone to easily retrieve a specific music piece by inputting expressions that describe their impressions of it. We have defined ten pairs of words the system will accept as input and have designed an impression scale for each one. Each scale has two words representing contrasting impressions, e.g. "sad" and "happy," and seven scale values between the two words. Users select a scale value for one or more scales to represent their impressions of the target music piece. (author abst.)
