| Abstract; It has been shown that all possible variations in objcct's appearance under changing illumination can be represented based on the illumination cone model. Thus the problem of object recognition under changing illumination becomes the question of how to construct an illumination cone for a given object. In the case of a convex and Lambertian object, it has been reported that an illumination cone is given as a convex combination of the object's extreme images defined for distinct surface normals. On the other hand, cast shadows need to be taken into account for concave objects. In this paper, we show that the previously proposed method for constructing an illumination cone with cast shadows has a problem in principle. Especially, we demonstrate that additional illumination directions, as well as those defined for distinct surface normals, have to be considered for constructing an illumination cone with cast shadows correctly.
