Abstract; We investigated the effect of"Choleste-support"capsule (FANCL Corporation, Yokohama) which contains natural lovastatin, an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, and plant sterol, on plasma lipid levels in hyperlipidemic subjects. Twenty-two hyperlipidemics (17 WHO type IIa and 5 type IIb) were enroled in this study after informed concent was given. Their average age was 67 years. After one month of lipid lowering diet 4 capsules per day of "Choleste-support" were administered. After three month of administration their average plasma total-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol fell from 256 .+-. 4 to 234 .+-. 6 and 171 .+-. 4 to 152 .+-. 6 mg/dL, respectively (p<0.01). The average decrease was 8.5 and 10.4%, respectively. Plasma triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol and high sensitivity-CRP did not show significant change during the observation period. Neither transaminases nor CPK showed abnormal increase during "Choleste-support" administration. Thus we demonstrated the effect of lovastatin-containing preparations which can be obtained without prescriptions on plasma lipid levels in hyperlipidemic subjects. Thus, "Choleste-support" seems to be effective in decreasing plasma cholesterol levels of mildly hypercholesterolemic subjects without marked side effects. (author abst.)
